Manufactured in the Westcountry - Quarry & Concrete Products

News: Glendinning buys Cornish Quarry

20th January 2009

Glendinning, the Westcountry's largest independent supplier of quarry and concrete products, has purchased the hardstone quarry business of Penhill Quarry & Haulage Limited based near Bude for an undisclosed sum.

The family owned business of Penhill, which recently gained planning consent to work further reserves at its Pigsdon Quarry, produces a range of hardcores, building and rockery stone and high PSV (Polished Stone Value) hardstone aggregate. These high PSV aggregates are approved by Devon County Council and Cornwall County Council for use in asphalt macadams on the roads throughout the two counties.

This acquisition not only maintains the family owned status of the business but also complements the major investment Glendinning is making in a new asphalt plant at its Linhay Hill Quarry, Ashburton which is currently undergoing commissioning.

Ian Ashford, Managing Director, said: "This is an excellent purchase for Glendinning which will help strengthen our business across the Westcountry. It will enable us to enter the asphalt wearing course market, with a secure supply of high PSV hardstone available to us from within the Westcountry, whilst at the same time giving us an even greater range of products and road contracting services produced in house."

Commenting about the acquisition, Roy Pengilley said: "When Glendinning approached us about purchasing the business we felt that this was the right way forward." Jimmy Pengilly added: "Like Penhill, Glendinning is also very much a family business and we know that they will strive to take the company successfully into 2010 and beyond."

Roy and Jimmy also said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff; the business would not have been such a success without the hard work and commitment shown to us by all of them. We would also like to say a big thank you to our customers who have supported us over the years and we hope that they continue to do business with us under the Glendinning banner."
